Quietness, 2021
Thanh Huong Doan (Ha Noi, b. 1990)

The winter theme continues with the lacquer painting Quietness by Thanh Huong Doan, displayed at the de Chapa restaurant. In the painting is a small Red Dao woman walking alone amidst the cold morning mist of Sapa. In the distance is the Stone Church, depicted with the meticulous eggshell and abalone shell inlay technique. The work is done in many layers, then sanded to get the details, textures and colours created from the first layers. It takes a lot of layers to increase the depth of the background and help the hidden colour layers to appear subtly. The final painting is a harmonious combination between the warm tones of orange vermillion and cockroach wing (transparent brown) lacquer with the cool tones of blue and green. Contrasting with the engulfing frostiness are the gilded rays of light shining down on the church and trees, engendering the spirit of positivity and optimism. Does this evocative artwork attempt to convey the message “after rain comes sunshine”?
