The Autumn of Ta Giang Phinh, 2021

Viet Cuong Chu (Ha Noi, b. 1981)

From the seventh floor to the restaurant, the primary material is lacquer on wood. The vertical painting The Autumn of Ta Giang Phinh by Viet Cuong Chu depicts the indigenous people carrying rice from the fields. Having visited Sa Pa more than ten times, Viet Cuong created numerous works inspired by its landscape. Ta Giang Phinh in the correct native language is Thai Giang Phinh, which means “the sun’s rays shine on the flat land.” Hidden in the clouds in the background is the vague figure of Ngu Chi Son (Five Finger Mountains), the second-highest mountain group in Vietnam, only after the Fansipan peak. The artist said that he had usually added human elements to his paintings to avoid the feeling of monotony and boredom. The size of the human figures is relatively small compared to the whole composition, emphasising the insignificance of humans in front of majestic nature. Instead of highlighting the loneliness, the group of four people walking closely together generates warmth and joy.
