The Spring Sunshine, 2020
Chan Nam Trinh (Ha Noi, b. 1959)

The Spring Sunshine of Chan Nam Trinh depicts the scene of the Red Dao people standing in the middle of the beautiful nature seen from afar. The women seem to be preparing to go to the farmers’ fair, and the boy looks forward to following his mother. The trees lean to the left as if a breeze has been blowing, and the sunlight passes through the leaves and dances shimmeringly on the ground. From his trips to Sapa on many different occasions, the Red Dao community has inspired the artist: “The beautiful, majestic and stunning Sapa has given me the emotions to create paintings on the topic of the life of the Red Dao people. Red Dao women’s costumes are considered the most beautiful in each Sapa fair; they wear black and blue shirts with red patterns on the sleeves, necks, flaps and lower parts. Red Dao women have the custom of shaving their eyebrows and the hair above their foreheads, often wearing red scarves or hats. The Red Dao people living in Ta Phin, Lu Khau, and Nam Cang still maintain their traditional costumes and culture.”
