The tranquil scene in Chan Nam Trinh’s The Hymn that Day is the imagination and nostalgia of a Sapa before tourism. The native woman walked quietly towards the Stone Church shrouded in the wintry fog. The Stone Church built by the French in 1895 is still intact nowadays, but its surrounding area has changed completely. The painting is simple and succinct yet effectively captures the typical past of the centre of Sapa town in the colonial period. Like Hai Hung’s The Mountains, The Hymn that Day preserves the images and profound feelings of a Northern highland that have gradually disappeared.
