Ngoc Nam Tran (Ha Noi, b. 1996)
 The Autumn of Sapa, 2021

The recurring themes and main style in Ngoc Nam Tran’s paintings are naturalistic still life arrangements in the interior space. With the two works Sapa in the Summer and The Autumn of Sapa, Ngoc Nam skillfully included the local natural landscape in the background, thus adding an open space to the still life compositions. The ripe yellow terraced fields are a clichéd subject in realistic highland paintings. However, in The Autumn of Sapa, the terraced fields are merely complementary backdrops for the vase of tithonia diversifolia, the dry rice paddy bouquet and the ethnic patterned fabric, creating an exciting contrast between the far and near. Ngoc Nam Tran’s paintings are often created using a painstaking multi-layered painting technique, which few young artists have the patience to pursue.
